National Garden Railway Show 2013 - Part 3

This is the third of three films of the Association of Narrow Gauge Modellers' National Garden Railway Show, 2013. This year I was struck by the wide variety of garden railways on show - from 16mm narrow gauge I've steam to ride on railways pulling passengers on 71/4" gauge track. I have therefore tried to give a flavour of the breadth on show in the first part of the film. I have also picked o...

Every year the National Garden Railway Show just gets better! There really is so much to see and do that this series of three films can only just scratch the surface. The 2013 show really showed the breadth of garden railways, with something for all tastes - from 16mm narrow gauge, to G Scale and mainline Gauge 1 running. There was something to please everyone. Even ride on railways! I hope tha...
Granite Island Garratt

Here then is a short film of my new Accucraft NG16 Garratt during its first run on the Granite Island Railway. This loco is manual control and hence for these first few steamings I ran it with the roof off in order that I could quickly access the controls in the cab if need be. Hence in the following footage the loco appears roofless, though I can assure you that she does have one! NOTE: I actu...

This film features some of the items displayed by traders at the show. There were some 80 traders at the show - the film captures just what caught my eye. I have no connection with any of the traders featured. Look out for t...

Now viewing in 2021, a great look back at happy times.
Absolutely wonderful ! Many thanks !
Lovely saddle-tank engine
My Grandfather worked at BICC ( British Insulated Calenders Cables ), Sir Tom, was named after Sir Thomas Calender. Her sister loco, Woto, was named after Sir Toms usual greeting on meeting someone “What ho!”
I worked in Keswick from 1963-66 prior to emigrating to Canada. I never visited the quarry train, if it even was in existence as an attraction so this is a nice catchup.
Glad you liked it James!
Good work, Gareth! It makes it look easy, and we all know it isn't... It does show how frantic it is, and conveys just how busy it is.
Nice event.
So good
"Two Feet is Good, Three Feet is Better"! Good one! I am curious though as to why not too many three foot gauge railways were built in the British Isles.
I'm your 200th sub! Mind subbing back? Thanks!
Great footage of such a great event. Thanks for sharing! Btw I also make railway videos. If you could, I would really appreciate it if you checked out my channel and subscribe if you like. Thanks!
Thanks again Granite Island for part two of your series. I enjoyed the coverage of the traders stands, lots of great things to gawk at! Cheers, Locowerke
Thank you for another great viewing of the show. I have never been, so until I can get there, I am enjoying your coverage of the event; Thanks for posting your efforts! Cheers, Locowerke
Thanks for the kind commemts: Do look out for Part 2 which will be available soon. For many years I was unable to attend the show, so I know that others do appreciate seeing what went on.
thank you for sharing
No problems - it's a pleasure - do look out for Part 2 which I am just putting together now.
2:01 Ass grab ;)
cat train! - reminds me of extreme express world grandprix (PS2)
Wow, the isle of man range is phenomenal! Great video!
Me, too!
Excellent little video thanx for sharing.
Very nice films! Thank you very much! Hopefully I'll be able to visit the show next year. Greetings from Germany.
so good !!!!
superbe video
Hi Lionel. They are indeed. I got mine second hand as they are not produced by Accucraft anymore. They are in the region of several thousands of £s. Have a google for Garratt Owners club - there are sometimes some listed for sale there which might give you an idea.
Those are beautiful loco's. Where did you get yours and what do they cost?
Great filming Gareth - and I jumped about a foot when the crash occurred!! Cheers Chris
Don't worry it's in part 2!!
you missed out saed y parc!!?!?!?
Thanks Trevor! Yes I'm definatly looking at getting a whistle when funds permit - trouble is I've blown all my funds on the Garratt, so it may have to wait a while!
Delightful! I also have one of these - in the pale green - and it's a solid performer. I'm in the process of adding a blow-down valve to the water glass, which I find suffers from air bubbles that render it pretty useless. I've also added a resonator whistle to mine, from DJB Engineering. If you're thinking about a whistle, I recommend it. Enjoy your Garratt and keep posting videos... Cheers!
very nice...
Rail-cat LOL
Very nice video, check out the Garden Rr video I just uploaded on My Channel
DCC is possible for Live Steam locos. All you need to do is supply the electricity used for the DCC system, which can be done either with batteries in a car trailing the loco, or through the track. I have seen a #1 gauge electric outdoor railway, which uses a DCC system. The owner also has a larger out door layout, with trains that run on an 18" gauge track. Those locos run with the DCC system, and they are all live steam.
DCC only works for trains powered by electricity through the track. You need radio control for live steamers.
Ever heard of radio control?
hj
I'm an enthusiast, a modeller and sympathetic to others, but I just can't get used to "live steam" hurtling along, seemingly uncontrollable and then stopping where it's not supposed to! Oh, and well done to R.B Mote for winning the prize draw too.
Very nice set of videos from the show! Nice to see my Ragleth on the Lightline stand featured too!
No problems (Pas de Problemes!). Hope they like them.
I´ve taken the liberty of placing the three videos on the French narrow gauge modelling site "Passion métrique et étroite". They were very interested in the Peterborough show!
Thanks. Watching after visiting, you always spot something you didn´t see during the actual visit. Excellent show, though and a great summary. Looking forward to the next two videos. And check out the Kent & North Wales LR´s new HD video for a different style of indoor 16mm steam (not so transportable though ...)
Thanks for that, unfortunately I couldn't make it this year so I am just watching the videos instead!
Subbed. Excellent films and great ideas for realistic camera angles. Check out my Kent & North Wales Light Railway, an indoor live steam layout located in Alsace, France.
@flopfp yeah DCC, but only the american trains have that.
now these are models!! did you notice that they are really steam powered? that is very cool!!
Subbed. Like the bridges. Check out the seven bridges on the Kent & North Wales Light Railway .... an indoor 16mm live steam layout.
Some of the engines you see here are live steam and require "real" drivers, controlling the trains by either radio control or by adjusting the controls in the cab by hand (manual control). I have not seen live steam engined controlled in the manner you suggest - I suspect this may be more achievable with locos with an electric motor - it is more common in G scale - see the Norman Crossing layout. Hope this helps.
hello.i have a question.is there any way to make the trains stop at their stations?and then to make them go again(without a person doing it...to program the train or something to have like pitstops? )i'm sorry for my bad english
Very Nice ! Thank for sharing. Greeting from Swiss.
Impressive layout!
